I submitted a couple of images to the FIND project by Preston is My Paris running as part of the 2011 Brighton Photo Fringe. Brighton is one of my favourite places to spend time. I find it very inspiring and a great place to make pictures. Some of the other people that have submitted images to the project are photographers Jason Evans and Martin Parr as well as writer, David Campany. Once the project ends a selection of the images will be made and turned into 4 magazines. It's a really great project, as are quite a few of the other's at the Fringe and well worth checking out if you fancy a day by the great British seaside.

First, a bit of history.....

Since its doors opened in 1998, The Hideout, a classic select goods store located in London’s Soho, has played a vital role in establishing and curating the international presence of an inordinate number of high-end street wear brands from New York and Tokyo. As the first store outside of Japan and the U.S, to sell brands such as Supreme, Visvim. Bathing Ape, Let It Ride, WTaps, Headporter & Unrivalled, The Hideout has always stood at the epicentre of all that’s exciting and cool in London and Europe and can take credit for setting the template for a new wave of retailing within men’s fashion.

I'd been aware of the Hideout for quite a while but was properly introduced to the store a few years ago by friend and fellow photomaker, Neil Bedford. It was great to work with a store with such rich British streetwear history and great product at it's core and have a lot of fun in the process.

After an unsuccessful attempt to shoot a few portraits of Jamie after a set at Corsica Studios earlier this year and a frustrating 5 am nightbus journey I was asked to shoot him for the cover story of the July issue of Clash magazine. I'm not ashamed to say (again) that I'm a big fan of Jamie's skills behind the decks as well as his work with The XX, his remix of Adele's Rolling in the Deep is possibly my favourite song this year, looking forward to hearing his solo material.

I was going through all my old film and came across some unused images from backstage so I got out my scissors and glue and created these 4 spreads of collages. A little while ago I started shooting the Ones to Watch section in Clash magazine after the art direction was taken over by the keen eye of Rob Meyers of RBPM studio. I met Rob years ago at uni but this is the first time we've been able to work on a project together and i'm enjoying every minute of it, this month's cover featuring Danger mouse, Daniele Luppi, Norah Jones and Jack White looks amazing. Here are a few tears from the latest issue which is out today and available all over the place, especially in WHSmith. Keep yours eyes peeled for the Gold foil on the cover.

Having had my first picture run in i-D the commissions have kept coming in, taking me on a colourful journey of experiences in London from chasing musicians until the early hours of the morning to backstage at the Topshop Unique SS11 show.

The series of images at the top are of Zoo kid frontman Archy Marshall who I managed to grab for a few moments just after he'd finished his set at the CAMP art's centre in Old street earlier this year. Rumour has it that Archy had turned down a feature in the NY times earlier that week so it felt like a great accomplishment to have tracked down and captured the kid from the Zoo in such an intimate way.

As for Charlotte, she was the only person that really captured my attention when I was backstage at Topshop. As per usual there were tons of other photographers around competing for her attention. Thankfully after talking to Charlotte for a few minutes and her being really excited that I was shooting film we stepped aside to a quiet corner and shot a few frames together which then ended up as this full page depicting the iconic i-D wink. Charlotte has a great energy and approachability about her, and stands tall from the crowd despite being a lot smaller than most, hopefully our paths will cross again in the future.

I knew I had a meeting at i-D coming up and wanted to have some new pictures to show so I was on the lookout for interesting people to photograph. I spotted Jackson as I was walking through my local market, he was working in a bike shop at the time, I asked what days he had off work so I could photograph him and he said that he worked every day. We agreed that I'd come back at the weekend as he was having his sleeve finished the day before. We shot these just outside the bike shop, apparently I took too long for his lunch that day and he got in trouble. We met up a few weeks later so I could show him the pictures and he'd left the bike shop a week before as he said he'd had enough of getting paid £2.50 an hour and having to cover up his tattoo's. I don't blame him.

Union Chapel, Islington, November 2010

Through various recent photographic assignments I've been getting to visit a lot of amazing music venue's around London, this being my favourite so far.

Union Chapel houses an alive and fully functioning church, providing a meeting place for local Christians as well as a shelter for local homeless people. In addition it is available to hire as a music venue with the incredible internal structure being perfectly suited to Sunday morning worship or the vocals of Tom Jones, The Pet Shop Boys, and Ellie Goulding, all of which played at the chapel as part of the Little Noise sessions last November.

I'm told one of the people who regularly attends the shelter painted a picture of Tom Jones the night he played which sold for £500 the next day, really hope that story is true as it paints the church in a really positive light (excuse the pun!)

H is for Holidays

An amazing piece of temporary interior design from the the Hermes J'aime mon carre pop-up shop at the Rochelle school of Art back in November. I'm told it took over 5 hours to build. All photographs and film for the project were shot by Matt Irwin. I had the pleasure of assisting Matt a few times earlier this year, only wish I'd been around for some of this project as it looks like he had a lot of fun shooting it.

After 2 failed attempts to see Interpol a call came through from i-D to photograph them for an i-spy feature on their website. Multiple blessing as not only did I finally get to see another of my favourite bands this year, I got to photograph them for one of my favourite publications, and take a friend, amazing. It's been a while since I've posted on here but since I last posted i've been to Berlin, met Bryan Ferry, photographed and interviewed by Nike, been to Edinburgh, had a snowball to the face, Modelled at LDN fashion week, started new personal projects, been to an Irving Penn exhibition and had 1 minor haircut disaster. All in all a great few months! Here's a collage of myself enjoying the benefits of the old passport photo machines in Berlin, a hand-printed image that I gave out as at my degree show and an overexposed and slightly damaged polaroid of my friend Jonnie all laid out on some camoflauge tissue paper, aquired on my trip to Edinburgh.

Fashion for Relief LDN 2010 x Haiti Hospital Appeal

Unless you've been living under a rock you'll be aware of the terrible earthquake that occurred just over a month ago in Haiti bringing destruction in an already broken nation. Last week Fashion for relief, headed up by Naomi Campbell and Sarah brown held a fundraising event in London for Haiti as part of the work they do for the White Ribbon Alliance. My friend Jonnie was given the opportunity to speak about his charity, the Haiti Hospital Appeal, and their work at the event.

A few weeks ago I visited the ShowStudio Fashion Revolution exhibition and took part in the interactive castings.

Shortly afterwards, POP magazine Menswear Editor Max Pearmain contacted me asking if I would be willing to take part in the next live shoot at Somerset House styled by himself, photographed by Jason Evans with make-up by Mel Arter. I agreed and experienced what was one of the most fun and inspiring days I've had in a long time. Last Friday saw yours truly go on the other side of the lens once again but this time with the added twist of a live audience and a drummer. Below you can see a couple of snapshots from the day taken from Jason's ongoing online project, thedailynice.com. An editorial from the shoot is to be released in the next issue of POP magazine which is scheduled for release in February 2010.

Nike/Apple iphone

Last month Nike asked me to shoot a number of locations around London for their most recent iphone application. The image here shows St Pauls Astroturf pitch just off Rotherhithe St. The locations were selected by the group of creatives that work with Nike in London in an effort to give an insight into the places that they go to for inspiration or to relax. Unfortunately I don't have an iphone so I haven't viewed the application myself but if its anything like the Nike I-D application i'm sure it will be worth downloading.

Road Trip

The weekend before last saw me making my annual visit to Liverpool for the Slamm Jamm competition at Rampworks skatepark. As per usual on these short skate trips I did my best to keep camera to eye at all times and document the weekend as much as possible. We got stuck in tons of traffic but only one quite major injury occured which is good going considering the way things usually go. I also managed to find a roll of film from Sweden that I thought I'd lost, more holiday snaps up soon.

My brother is currently living in Finland and had a week off so I flew out to visit him last Monday. We caught a boat to Sweden part way through the week and then I flew home from there. More often than not I end up shooting more film than I can afford to develop and scan and so seem to have a constant backlog of pictures waiting to come to life. I've recently been able to develop a load of film that I had from over summer and found time to scan it. The only thing missing was actually be able to go in the darkroom to do my own prints and contact sheets. I'm really enjoying shooting lots of film again and continuing to explore how to get the best from it, which I imagine i'll be doing for as long as I keep taking pictures. (click images to enlarge)

A couple of weeks ago I was lucky to be present at one of the More Than a Game tour stops in Crystal Palace. As part of the tour NBA MVP of 2009 Lebron James was giving short coaching sessions and was interviewed about his rise from high school talent to NBA star and what steps he has taken to ensure that he stays on top of his game. I managed to get a few snaps despite a very annoying and persistent papparazzi style photographer who felt the need to stand in front of anyone else taking a photo that day. A picture I shot in Barcelona earlier this year of NIMH europe's pro rider Oli Short has been used as the latest NIMH advert featured in issue 33 of BE-Mag. The advert was also made into an A1 poster that was given out on the Animhals tour earlier this year. I have a few left over so if you'd like to get your hands on one please get in contact. Right up until I graduated from university my walls were covered in skate posters that I'd collected since the age of 11 so to have had one of my favourite pictures made into a poster feels great. Hopefully it's found its place on many a bedroom wall.

I've not long come back from a trip to the States, a few pictures to follow. I say a few as I decided to put my camera down a lot of the time and just enjoy wedding festivities amongst other things, it was definitely time for a break, now I'm back I'm fired up to start snapping lots again. Trying to keep on top of a blog without a laptop is near impossible, I really need to acquire one, one way or another. Anyone up for a (relatively) small donation to the SJB laptop fund?

A couple of weeks ago I shot a 10 year anniversary party/fashion show for Fenchurch, at Village Underground in East London. Somehow a few of the pictures have ended up on the Vice photo blog. I'm currently experiencing the busiest time I've had since I started freelancing which is great but things have been HECTIC. Even though I'm really worn out a lot of the time it feels great to be busy again. I've been snapping and traveling a lot, most of the time with the worst access to the internet I've ever had hence blog updates being pretty thin on the ground recently. While I was away I acquired a new nickname and also discovered (the hard way) that I may well be allergic to seafood, even though I think it tastes great. Along the way we all experienced what we believe to be various degree's of swine flu which resulted in the picture below. Here's a few snaps from the ole telemaphone.

Double Trouble

I saw this jacket in one of the best TK Maxx' I have and ever will go in. I'll definitely be visiting it again in the near future. I was very close to buying it but the fact that I can't think of a situation in the near future where i'll actually be able to wear it without getting it dirty held me back. I may go ahead and get it anyway.

Jetting off on a tour around Europe for a few weeks and hopefully this time I'll have internet access so I can put some snaps up on here. For the time being you can enjoy this eagle statue that I spotted on my way to the Vietnamese embassy this morning. First stop is the FISE event in Montpellier then Paris, Liverpool, Brighton and Barcelona to finish so come and say hi if your at any of the events happening in these places!

Short trip, long days, naked old men and lots of love from a dog that wouldn't leave me alone pretty much sums up my trip to Barcelona last week! I hardly put down my camera the whole time and made sure the trip was super productive so I've got loads of good pictures to show from it that I can't put up here yet but will as soon as I can. Off on a tour around Europe and parts of the UK on May 21st and hopefully this time I'll have access to the internet so I can put stuff on here as I go along.

The battery for my latest polaroid purchase arrived today so I decided to test it out. I didn't have any human subjects available so I grabbed what I could see and made a little still life setup. Weird colour shifts as per usual which works pretty well, no shot is ever quite the same.
